RE: Hoof color
Add to this individual variability. My mare with the 3 black hooves
cannot go barefoot very well. She has the same sire and a very similarly
bred
dam as my gelding. My gelding with four white hooves can go barefoot
(if he's not under heavy work - I don't want to go into the barefoot
discussion here). They were born and raised at the same place and I
boarded them at the same place together for several years with totally
different hoof wear issues. Also, my mare tends to be a pacer like
the sire and wears down the front hooves which have shallow frogs.

What it boils down to is 1) genetics, 2) care 3) environment.

re white hoofs is exactly wrong.I think black hoofs ARE harder-and much
more brittle.I think white hoofs ARE softer, and more resilient/less
prone to chipping and cracking.I may be wrong. The best hoofs among our
Field Trial horses in Va. are found on a little horse who has run
barefoot for years.All white.
