skill level and head smarts, i think.  A gelding will tell you, more easily, 
when he is tired whereas a mare will be harder to notice.  i prefer mares, 
only because they tend not to "punk out" when you need them to climb a hill.  
But there is the occasional gelding who has what it takes.  But i think about 
half as many as mares.
