RE: 30 degree hair line (from Barb Peck to Darolyn)
Hi all, been busy as heck these last few weeks... still can't stray to far
from e addiction of reading and sharing about the Nat trim.
will address e from barb below quickly as I have a brand new project. I
just took on a slightly foundered mare (June 1st) , no rotation yet, thank
goodness, but swollen lamina. she is a full sister to our great horse DJB
Raad Bey, (reining Natl. 50 Mi. Ltwt champ).... I was talking to her breeder
about buying her since Raad had done so well only to find out about the
founder. He had been advised to put heart bars on & sure enuf ... she was
lamer than ever.... talked him into bringing her over to the vet
yesterday... did x-rays & started trying to convince owner/breeder to let me
bring her to my house & try to fix her.... hard to do a full education
number on someone that doesn't know much about the trim. My vet, T-Bone,
Dr. Terrance Buchanan is pretty open minded & has been following my success
with the trim thus far,... & thank God, actually encouraged the owner to
allow me to try to turn the mare around... now this is a bit scary, but I
can't stand the thought of this mare going down hill any more than she
has....
I'll keep you guys posted on how she progresses.

Darolyn:
You may not worry about toe length, because your horses are probably being
used regularly, and wearing the toe to their optimum length. Probably same
with the soles.
DJBD: NO, I ACTUALLY WORK PRETTY HARD ON KEEPING THOSE TOES SHORT.... THAT
WAS ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS THAT VET T-BONE TOLD ME 9 MONTHS AGO.... DON'T
LET THE TOES GET TOO LONG.
And I'll venture that most of your horses were sound, and in regular work,
and if you'd X-rayed them, you'd of found most (if not all) had a robust
digital cushion and just needed the heels lowered.
ACTUALLY, WHAT STARTED ME IN THE TRIM WAS A LIGHT CASE OF FOUNDER.... BUT I
DO HAVE A LOT OF SOUND HORSES TOO.... THERE ARE 40 ON THE PLACE
(Are you doing repeated opening cuts, and repeatedly paring the sole on a
regular basis...?)
I'M DOING LOTS OF REPEATED & FAIRLY AGRESSIVE OPENING CUTS... PARING SOLE ON
VERY REGULAR BASIS... LOL... WUD LIKE IT TO BE MORE REG & OFTEN.... BUT
SCHEDULE IS TUFF WHEN THERE ARE ONLY 1.5 PEOPLE TO TRIM 40 HORSES.
All circumstances (and horses) are not the same. And the lateral/UNEQUAL
cartilages are not the same in all horses. So the measurement at the heel
(3.5cm from the top of the cartilages to the ground) should not be cast in
stone for all horses.
ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!!! THAT'S WHY WOMEN ARE SO GOOD AT THIS LOL... SORRY
ABOUT THE GENDER BASHING.... I THINK WE ALL TRUST OUR GUT INSTINCT TO DO
DIFFERENT THINGS ON DIFFERENT HORSES AFTER WE SEE EACH INDIVIDUAL FOOT,
USING THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED FROM STRASSER INFO AS WELL AS ALL OUR OTHER
MENTORS.
Alot of the people doing Strasser's trim are not riding, their horses are
lame, or have previously foundered. They trim the heels, to get the 30
degree angle and the toe gets away from them..but they keep after the heels,
striving for that 30 degree angle requirement.
Strasser has lots of instructions on how to lower the heels, thin the sole
and remove the bars, but I haven't seen anything yet that addressed proper
trimming of the toes (They do back the toe up by vertically rasping the wall
back to the white line in some cases)
CAN'T ARGUE TO MUCH WITH ABOVE, BUT I HONESTLY BELIEVE MORE PEOPLE ARE
BACKING THE TOES UP & I ENCOURAGE IT WHEN I MENTOR FOLKS ALSO... FOR OUR
RIDING I DON'T LIKE A LONG TOE AT ALL...
And I'm with Bob on the 30 degree rule.... The hairline should only be a
visual guide.
Trigonometry is the mathematics based on triangles... the darn foot is NOT
a 2D triangle..
NOW MAYBE I HAVE A BETTER NATURAL EYE THAN SOME, BUT I TRY TO LOOK AT THE
WHOLE FOOT WITH A SOFT EYE & END UP WITH AN ATTRACTIVE, LOW HEEL, BUT NOT
EXCESSIVELY LONG TOE. I'M CONSTANTLY AMAZED WHEN I DO PUT THE ANGLE PLATE
ON THE FOOT, THAT THAT 30 DEGREE ANGLE IS PRETTY DOGGONE RIGHT ON...
I'm not against people riding or competing barefoot.. I'm against setting a
precise set of rules and measurement tolerances for all hooves on all horses
regardless of the horses job.
TOTALLY AGREE. WE'VE FOUND WE CAN'T BE QUITE AS AGRESSIVE WITH THE PARING &
SUCH & THEN EXPECT OUR HORSES TO GO OUT & WORK THE NEXT DAY... ALL OF THIS
NEEDS TO BE DONE WITH A THOUGHT TO THE HORSES JOBS, ENVIRONMENT, AND WHAT
THEY HAVE BEEN NATURALLY BLESSED WITH.... AND LAST OF ALL "WHAT MAN HAS DONE
TO CHANGE THAT"!!! MEANING .... YEARS OF HIGH HEELED SHOEING & SUCH.
