Well, it would certainly be physically possible, on some of our easier trails. In those same "olden days" we had a few 150-milers and a rare 200-miler or two, allotted 36 and 48 hours respectively. I know some of the 150's were won in well under 24 hours, and can't remember the winning times on the 200's (the one I was familiar with was in rough terrain, so faster speeds would have been difficult). However, given a good desert trail, a full moon, and a fresh horse for the second 100, I don't see where it would be particularly impossible to do. Just a matter of ethics in competition, which is why AERC halted the practice.
