slow down that canter

Nina Vasiliev rides4fun@hotmail.com
Hi,

It is possible to teach him to canter slowly in the arena.

If you have access to a round pen, that would be best, if not
try to find a SMALL arena. Work him at the walk and trot, be
sure that he's paying attention to you, that he responds to
your light requests to slow from the trot to the walk. Then,
after at least of 20 minutes of work, ask for
the canter. Once he's cantering, ask to trot. Don't
let him canter more than 3-4 strides before asking to trot.
This avoids his gaining speed. When he responds, praise him.
Then again, canter 3-4 strides and ask for the trot. He may
get frustrated, but if he's in a small area, he won't get going
too fast. This is why a round pen is a good choice. Be
generous with praise and stroking, (not pats/slaps, he might
think you're punishing him.)Repeat this until he politely trots
when asked, and he will eventually. It may take 20 requests.
But once he politely trots when you gently ask, PRAISE HIM AND
PUT HIM AWAY. This method teaches him that he will have to slow
down soon. So instead of his thinking, "yippee I'm going to
canter fast," he'll start thinking about slowing as soon as he
 begins to canter.

You could start this on the lounge line if you want. Do let him
canter a few strides so he won't think that cantering was the
wrong response to your aid. Lots of praise, and STOP PRACTICING
 once he gets it right.

Repeat this each time you work in the arena for a week or two.

Let us know how you're doing!

Nina
