Flatwoods Ride
Dear Ridecampers:
I look for posts on actual rides to hear how they
were but no one seems to be writing about them so I thought I would share about
the ride I just rode.
Flatwoods was about 54 miles outside of Redding, CA
in Big Bend. We drove out a winding road to "the middle of no-where" and found a
really nice camp in the trees. There were about 43 riders for the 50, about 14
for the 75, and I don't know how many for the 25. The trails were beautiful and
wide and wound through trees with some open areas. The rain that had fallen a
couple days before made the trails really nice and not dusty. There were rocky
areas but nothing really bad. My friend and I rode the 50 and took
it at a very slow pace. Our goal was to finish and really enjoy the day, which
we did. The trail was well marked with chalk... no ribbons or maps but none were
needed. We ended the day next to the river and finished over the damn of a
beautiful (small) lake. The food was great and the awards were punctuated with
humor as a few people were teased as they went up to get their finishing
award.
This was a really nice ride with beautiful scenery.
The ride management and volunteers were really friendly and efficient. Vetting
went very smoothly with Susan McCartney (she is great). We were also able to
weigh our horses before and after the ride. My horse lost 24 pounds which I
thought was quite good for the day (it was warm).
Looking forward to seeing other stories about the
rides!
Happy Trails,
Patty
