I have several english riding and jumping book all say that the english 
saddle should be 4" or one hand behine the high point of the withers.  To 
put the saddle in the correct place you should first put the saddle on at 
the hight point of the withers and push it back until it stops.  The saddle 
should be in the correct place.  The cantel should also be 1" to 2" higher 
than your pomel.
