There’s an excellent book out called “Understanding the Horses Back” by Sarah Wyche. It lists a whole checklist of things to go through in trouble shooting back problems. Believe me, I know about what you’re going through – 6 saddles later I licked the major issue by getting a ReactorPanel saddle, but all the other things need to be addressed as well – like good dentistry, shoeing and proper riding/exercise.
Len Brown of Orthoflex has a video out on palpating the horses back. It’s a little homegrown type of video, but it shows step by step how to pinpoint back soreness.
If you run your fingers with medium pressure on either side of the spine and your horse dips his back dramatically at any specific point – yes there is soreness. If you continue to palpate, sometimes he’ll get a little desensitized and not dip his back at the touch.
Good luck!
