RE: Re: Shore to Shore
Actually, my husband's horse was treated at a UMECRA ride (IDRA) two years
ago about a half-hour after receiving A's and B's on his completion check.
The ride manager pulled his AERC completion, period. We did not even know
the horse had been pulled from completion until the ride results were
published in AERC News (completion award was received). In addition, we were
new to this ride and never even knew it was a UMECRA ride (no mention of
that on the ride flyer...I still have it!). There was no discussion of
UMECRA or it's rules at the ride meeting, and we certainly were not given
any rules in writing. I suppose those facts were a "given" to Midwesterners,
but this was a disappointing introduction to UMECRA rides for us, and we
have not been back to another. Perhaps someday. I would hope that this was
an exception to the manner in which most are run.
I agree with the Hausers on the one-hour treatment rule. I have heard from
others that there has been a few cases of a sick or questionable horse being
hauled prematurely off property to avoid a pull.

Actually UMECRA endurance rules operate in both manners. Most UMECRA rules
are in addition to AERC rules and so announced in writing before the ride as
special rules. The only notable exception to this is that if a horse meets
completion requirements at the one hour check and later needs medical
attention he can get an AERC completion but not a UMECRA one.
I personally do not like this UMECRA rule because it could encourage someone
to trailer a sick horse to preserve their completion. I have never seen
this and hopefully never will.
