sore spine with SS

My husband and I rode for a week in the mountains last year...long days and 
sitting in the saddle all the time (no 2-point).  Altho the horses didn't 
appear to have sore backs at the time, this spring they have shed out with 
fist-sized patches of white hair over the spine at mid back.
