My Garmin Etrex Summit has worked very well. About the size of a cell phone,
built in altimeter can give elevation and even rate of climb or decent. It works well
with the National Geographic USGS Topographic Maps. I have one for my own
state of Idaho. The maps are more detailed by the state, rather than a national map.
We can ride a trail and then download on to the map, get an overhead view of your
rout and even get an elevation profile. The Garmin has so many modes that I am still
learning how best to use them, compass, way points, markers, and much more.
