RE: GPS

My experience with the hand held Garmin with out differential correction is and error of 10% to 15%. I have mapped trails and then over laid the Garmin GPS route on the Orthophotos and found deviations as much ad 200 meters. This was in comparison with a Trimble Prolyte with differential correction over the same route.  The Trimble showed deviations in the range of two to five  meters. Of course you get what you pay for. Garmin for hundreds Trimble for thousands.

The Garmin will get you in the area the Trimble in the pot.

Beth ,
The 310 shoulld work just fine. In your truck were you using an external
antannae or just holding the GPS? I have a Garmin unit that has an antennae
that attaches to the top of my riding helmet.
