Good ancestors are important for using horses, too.  My rule of thumb is that if I have to ask myself the above question, I geld.  The ones that should be stallions will be obvious from the day they are born, and you never have to ask yourself.  At least that is my experience.  Horses that would make moderately good stallions make FABULOUS geldings.  Geld, and enjoy him as a fantastic riding gelding.
