re: Bermuda grass

Bonnie,
In the area I live (central TX) the majority of
people feed bermuda coastal hay. In Tx we do have a
higher incidence of a certain kind of impaction colic
(ileal impactions: a rare type of colic in most other
areas of the country) that has been linked to feeding
coastal hay. However, in the grand scheme of things,
ileal impaction colics are not a major problem...just
something vets think about when they get a diet
history on a horse. It tends to be more of a problem
with horses not used to the hay (out of state horses
that move to TX)...so, as with any other new feed,
start your horses slowly on coastal hay.
