I live on a dirt road and love it. But there are some good trails across a 
busy highway and I have to cross at a blind corner. I never ride across 
asphalt. I dismount, wait and listen for traffic sounds, then trot in hand 
across the highway when it is safe. I seldom ride on asphalt because if 
spooked a horse could slip and fall. I dismount and lead.  A friend of mine 
had a horse slip on asphalt and she broke her leg when the horse fell on her.
