Don't use hardener or something that might be difficult to get out if you find you need to treat it again.  Leave it open and fill it with betadine soaked gauze (the long strips or roll kind)  to protect it from getting any gunk in it.  You can easily pull it out again and put fresh back in.  Instead of also having a shoe, why not just use the easyboot?
