Locoweed/Jimsonweed: Locoweed is "Astragalus"
I'm sorry, I was mistaken. Jimsonweed and
locoweed are different plants. Both are toxic to horses.
Locoweed is astragalus spp. My browser
finds a lot of listings for herbal remedies. There are
illustrations. It is a vetch. There are many varieties and not all
are poisonous. If I had it in my pasture I'd eradicate it.
Equus 212 (feature article,
June 1995, pg 31-32) discusses plants that contain neurotoxins, including
locoweed. "The indolizidine alkaloids present in locoweed... disrupts the
function of brain cells. Locoism has no cure and the effects are
irreversible... " ghaack.
Pardon my random neural firing - I shouldn't
have been so cocky, eh?
