Re: Can Dogs get Mad Cow?

Dogs can get it as can cats if they are feed meat contaminated with the
prions(sp?) which spread the disease.
I belive these are stored in the brain stem and spinal tissue hence in the
UK the slaughter houses have to ensure the meat is not contaminated with
matter from the spine or brain.

BSE can not be caught by airborne transmission only be eating a contaminated
source hence the cases in the Uk where cattle were fed meat from scrappie
infected sheep . Sadly despite the UKs experience France and Germany now
have cases as they banned importing meat from the UK for a while but
AMAZINGLY continued to feed their cattle the same types of pellets.

The disease is transmitted via the food chain through eating ( not via
droppings) hence the reason humans who have eaten contaminated beef have
very tragically developed Croitzvelt vacolf (sp?) disease which brings on a
form of dementia not unlike altzihmers. I heard a very frightening programme
on BBC radio 4 this week saying that its now belived the disease cna take
upto 30 years to incubate in humans.
