Sugar Beet Industry Downturn
Hey, Beet Pulp Fans! Listen Up!
The March 2001 issue of "California Farmer" has a very interesting cover
story about the sugar beet industry and how it has fallen on hard times
in Calif. The good news, though is that there are still two processing
mills left in the Central part of the state, after the recent closure of
the last remaining Northern mills. Growers say that the cost of
shipping to the two remaining mills will be prohibitive, so they will be
looking for other crops to plant to replace their usual sugar beet crop.
It'll be interesting to see how this developement affects the price and
availabilty of one of our favorite horse feeds. (The magazine has a
website which may offer more info to those interested:
www.california.com).
