Why don't you tell your instructor to get lost?  If you want to clip, that's fine, but just because the horse doesn't look GQ isn't a reason to do it.  I don't know where you live, but if you clip, you'll have to blanket.

My riding instructer wants to clip my distance horse, something about his
looking like a overgrown molting saggy goat...
What clips would you advise (ive had him cliped before but...) He is not
stabled but has a shelter and winter is on its way out.
