Suggestion:  Since you are in the middle of nowhere, contact an equine veterinary person in another region, mail the xrays, email the blood work.  Your veterinary should be willing to work with experienced equine vets, since it is the horse's welfare at stake.  I work with Mike Vanzwol, DVM, Evergreen Equine, when there is a big problem I am uncomfortable with local vet opinions (even in "horse country" so to speak).  He can be contacted at mcv_dvm@email.msn.com  (there is an underline between mcv and dvm - mcv_dvm).  Mention my name.
