Actually, it's one more step in a long chain... Such as the gene in
Appaloosas (present in some small percentage of the breed--about 12% AIR) for
a "different" type of hemoglobin that has a higher oxygen dissociation curve.
Horses that inherit this type of hemoglobin clinically run higher heart
rates at work as they have a more difficult time "unloading" oxygen at the
tissue level....
