Weight absolutely matters. In training horses on treadmills without riders
and watching the difference under a rider, we found that the larger horses
were able to tolerate the incresed weight much better than the smaller
horses. That is, the smaller horses might just do better on the treadmill,
but when taken out and put under a rider, they did less well (in heartrate
response to exercise) than the larger horses that they had outperformed on
the treadmill. Big swing in comparative capabilities.
