Wolfgang: What do you generally recover to? Do you generally use 60 or
another figure?

Any advice on how I can get my horses rates up higher? It's not as if I
don't have mountains, I'm surrounded by them (to almost 10,000'). All we
do is hills, that's why we are so strong I think on the most difficult
rides. I haven't ever trained for speed on the flat. Any idea how far
(distance) you are trotting in 10 minutes at 130?

I just got my HRM fixed and used it last week on one of my horses. I made
him trot up a really long hill in the mud, this after trotting probably 3-4
miles straight all gradual uphill but then the hill at the end another 1/4
miles much steeper. I got his HR up to 179 but it probably didn't stay
there for very long. By the time we get to the top it is already dropping
back down again. He was working quite hard though, with a full winter coat
a really warm day (for us, 60 degrees) and again it was muddy. It took him
4 minutes to drop to 58. Then we trotted another 3-4 miles up a gradual
hill but not muddy and no real steep parts and he was averaging about 130
and as soon as we stopped at a puddle to drink he dropped to 49 in about 30
seconds. I know he was working hard because I was ponying the other horse,
and they both were soaking wet with sweat.

Would it really benefit my horses to work them at higher rates? I haven't
ever been able to get their rates up to 200 or above, and even if they get
close to that it drops right back down. I suppose I would have to carry
more weight or carry a whip and make them go even faster? I'm afraid that
right now they are both conditioned to decrease speed as soon as they get
to 165 on the HRM, and we never go above that in competition.

Thanx,

P.S. the only time I have had the HR go over 200 was when a mountain lion
growled at us, and the horse wasn't even moving (I about jumped clear to
the moon tho! <G>)
