Hi Heather,
just because an exercise program does not consume a lot of calories
does not mean it can not be useful to the rider. Strengthening
exercises, particularly of the adductors [muscles down the inside of
your leg] and stretching can be done very easily with no special
equipment. You may also want to strengthen your hamstring muscles.
When stretching you should focus on the calf, the adductors, and the
hip flexors [the muscles that connect the abdomen to the front of
your thigh]. All stretches should be held for 10-15 seconds and
repeated 3 times, 2-3 times per day. If expending calories is your
goal, ie doing more aerobic exercise, running and walking require
nothing more than a decent set of shoes. If you need specifics, you
can write me directly. Being aware of posture all through the day
may allow you to more easily maintain a correct posture on the horse.
