I have a friend who doesn't wear her helmet all the time, only sometimes.  
And a lot of her horses like to buck.  One of them bucked me off, when I was 
leasing him...left me with an "L" shaped scar on my chin, and a permanant 
hoof print on my arm...ahh, battle scars, gotta love them. BUT, my head is 
still functioning nicely, because I had my trusty helmet on.
