Do you use a fan to circulate the air or is natural convection enough?
Wouldn't the ground in the hole freeze after a time of circulating the
cold surface air?

I have a spring in the paddock. I closed it in and the water from the
overflow runs into a rubber bucket for Meshack about 55 degrees
year round. Can't beat that for covenience. Having to haul water
all winter long would dampen my enthusiasm for horses <g>.
