Non-freezing strategies (was Buckets)
For those of us with water troughs way too far from electricity who live in
less balmy climates than some RCers who are very spoiled, could people send
in their strategies for keeping the water from freezing? If those
strategies exist?
Sometimes the ice is 4" to 6" and even thicker on my troughs. I have set
up second troughs right next to the first ones to put the ice chunks in -
an incredible amount of water is wasted by throwing ice on the ground (and
I don't have a lot of water to spare!). By the end of our coldest part of
the winter, my ice troughs are filled and overflowing with ice chunks, even
if it has thawed a bit during the day and the horses have drunk some of the
water. This is not the greatest solution!
