As a group, overall, they have more genetic potential for long distance work
than, say, Quarter Horses, which have been selected and bred for something
else entirely. However, no two individuals have the SAME genetic potential
(other than identical twins) because they do not have exactly the same genes!
It is easy to see that horses all "look" different--and they are different
on the inside, too. Every ability to make an enzyme or have a metabolic
pathway for some particular thing is controlled genetically--and the sum of
all that can vary a great deal from one to another, even within the same
breed.
