Our rides have cutoff times; the idea is to help the rider pace himself so 
that he doesn't run overtime at the finish.  It also allows vets to wrap up a 
given vet check and move on to another site or sites.  Another possible 
advantage is that the vets theoretically know whether there are any more 
riders out on the trail.  It's not an infallible system, however.
