What I do is one of three things---either run the hot wire through a PVC
pipe through the tree area, run it through an old garden hose, or use
insulated electrical wire through that area.    This can be longer lengths
of pipe/hose/wire, or smaller sections of pipe/hose can be held against a
tree with plain old baling wire, which usually gives some as the tree grows.
