How the horses and where the horses are kept can make a big difference,
too.  My gelding can go barefoot in the summer pasture where I used
to board in Portola Valley, but during the winter in San Jose, 
his hind feet were sore without even much riding due to 
the soil differences between the pastures!  Much steeper hills 
and grittier soil.  
"It would be interesting to know where the people in this discussion are
from.  Probably makes a big difference on whether or not you can
train/ride
barefooted.
