Heart rate monitors

Hello everyone,
I have  been looking in to heart rate monitors for a better accuracy
of my horses heart rate while conditioning.
I have no idea how they work or what are the best brands. All I have
looked at is the prices which can be expensive.
All I want is something that can give me an accurate reading and is not
very pricey.
Any info would be graetly appricated.
I am in no hurry to get one the season just ended for me but I would like to 
get one before next season.
