Cheryl, The actual hooded cavalry stirrups are heavier than I like for endurance. The added weight seems to make my knees sore. (That's in addition to the arthritis and torn cartilage. :-0 ) We've found some hooded packer stirrups that use light weight nylon instead of ash wood for the strrups. It seems to cut down on the wieght quite a bit. Someone else asked if anuone had ever been skwered by branches etc in the cages. I saw a woman catch her cage on a branch and the saddle was literally yanked off the horse. The girth broke! It does happen, but I think it's pretty rare.
