The only time I've noticed that smell is after multi-day rides (these 
weren't endurance but trail rides) when we used the "brush & air dry" 
method.  The horses were healthy, and since it seemed to happen every time 
we did these rides, seems to me that it's sorta like stinky sneakers - too 
much use, not enough cleaning.  The answer is to wash the pads.  Lif
