Packer's a hundred years ago probably did it the same way we do now-a
tie goes from the back of the pack saddle to the lead rope of the next
horse. These are connected by a break away loop.  The break away loop is
essential.  The horses have to learn to all go on the same side of any
trees, etc.  Not always easy to teach!
