Healthy mares have a pretty good vaginal seal, and stay pretty "clean."  I 
could see this for a mare that was tipped and gaping, maybe, but I'd clean 
her up and do a Casslick's repair!  As for the boys--the "beans" come 
primarily from smegma, not from external contamination either...
