We have a clay soil and it does get VERY muddy around the
tires. We have used these for 20 years. We cut the hole
(where the wheel would go) VERY large on both sides. There
is great drainage...hold NO water. Never had a problem,
never had a horse hurt and boy does it SAVE on hay wastage!!
I imagine if you keep enough hay in it, there would not be a
problem with sand..or perhaps you could put a screen on the
bottom (the nylon type, not steel - to avoid rust).
These each hold 6 east coast size (18 x 18 x 36) bales...but
we usually just put out two or three in each...even the
weanling can reach the hay with no problem.
