RE: oat hay
I've noticed that the quality of the hay is a big issue with oat hay.
The place I boarded at before was feeding oat hay that was too mature -
like in STRAW! It was their evening ration, they would be getting
alfalfa in the morning. When you see hungry pasture horses in the
late summer here in dry California not eating they hay, you know that
the hay was real bad. I would be there 3 hours after feeding and
they would lose interest in eating the hay, and yet were losing weight.
I spent some time doing research on hay, printed out the articles
regarding hay nutrition and maximal harvest time to give to the
facility management after we got into a "discussion" about hay
quality. I since moved my horse to another facility that cares about
hay quality and haven't looked back since. (I happened to be migrating
anyway, but I told him I wasn't coming back because of the hay.)
But a nice younger oat hay is pretty stuff, the horses like it, but
I've only seen good oat hay at one boarding facility. That's all I know
about it!

Subject: RC: oat hay
Is anyone familiar with feeding oat hay.....pro's and con's? Can it be
fed
by itself, or does it need to be mixed?
Thanks in advance,
Betsy
