Re: Re: Whips in eventing
Hi
over here in the Uk whips are allowed in endurance events provided they are
below 30 inches in length.
I find this an irritating rule as I carry my whip for two reasons:
a. I ride in heavy traffic and a shooling (dressage) lenght whip stuck out
side wise psychologically makes car drivers give you double the room they
normmally would instad of driving close enough to pull your stirrup iron
off, and
b. its useful in instances of pet dog attacks as owners call of their dogs
if its obvious you can whip them, but think fidos playing with pretty horse
if you can not!
A short whip doesnt help in either of the above situations, and at the end
of the day if your horse is flagging 'cos its tired no amount of hitting it
will make any difference. So usually I compete without a whip.
Spurs are not allowed, and i must say they require a higher quality of leg
aids than most riders can achive including me!
I have seen some horrible sights at local shows dresage and jumping wehre
spurs are abused so it seems quite a sensible rule to me.
I can sympathise with riders of inveterate shyers who use spurs though. But
I find a rolled up map case works equally well as a detterant. Also I find
holding the whip at an angle sort of parrallel with my horses eye so he can
see it , works so well I dont have to use it on him!
