The rain schedule in northeast this summer made my 15 yr. old gelding mildly colic 3 times with the vet and a few other times where we were able to get out of it ourselves. People say its because the grass can't get old, high protein levels. I kept him in on hay more hours. He lost weight. I gave him 10%fat textured grain. He colicked. The last vet suggested keeping him off seeds in the grain. To do this I have to change grain. This horse has always been a hard keeper. He is wormed.
Question: who makes a 10%fat 5%protein extruded or pellet feed and is this the best for him. He needs weight for the winter and I thought with high fat I would be feeding less grain. I would prefer to feed no grain as horse is not in any training but he'll become a skinner.
Thanks, Kate
