Certainly it can be used as a gimmick, that's why I said "properly adjusted"
it is an aid.  However, if you go to any class A show, you will see most of
the western trainers, and some of the others, using it as a gimmick and a
quick fix to get a horses head down.  Used properly, it is just insurance
that your horse won't run around with his nose up in the air avoiding the
bit and making you fight for control.

Good point, but I agree with Abby's math.  I've had ONE horse in my whole 
life that truly benefitted from one, and we didn't use it for long....
