More recent research is also implicating potassium---or, more specifically,
the DCAB (dietary cation anion balance), a balancing between ions with a
positive electrical charge (ie, calcium, potassium, sodium, etc) against
those with a negative electrical charge (ie chloride, bicarb, etc).
Actually, the people on the cutting edge are the ruminant nutritionists, a
very similar syndrome in dairy cattle called milk fever puts alot of cows on
the ground and kills them quick if it's not caught.
