RE: Pulling up hills?
I "made" my farrier put on wider web shoes all around and it DID
improve his way of going uphill, so my farrier doesn't disagree
with me as much anymore!
My first gut reaction is for you to take a few Centered
Riding or dressage lessons. Made a world of difference for me!
At least I know what the difference feels like when my guy "lugs"
up or when he's engaged and "on the bit" and working through his
back. It took me a little while to incorporate what I learned
in practice and it's a continual learning process, so don't feel
discouraged.
For me, it wasn't something that I learned from reading, but by
doing and gentle coaching from a knowledgeble person on the ground.
My horse never learned to carry himself until *I* learned to
tell him how to carry himself.

<<First, make sure that the hind feet are shod so that there is a decent
grip.
Then, practice on shallower inclines with good footing until the horse
learns
to reach up underneath from behind. Hills are the very best teacher for
this,
but shallow hills, not steep ones. With steep hills, the horse doesn't
know
what to do at first.
