RE: 2pt,mentors, etc.

Shannon,
What I've done to guestimate distances when I'm not on measure trails is
this: go find a safe place to ride where you can also drive your car and
measure out a quarter mile. Then identify specific speeds within each
gait - like the slow ambling walk, a nice working walk and a speed walk
(when he'd rather be trotting!) etc. Do each of those consistently over the
quarter mile and calculate your mph.

Then when you go on un-measured trails try to do a certain speed for a
significant period of time - like 15 minutes of working walk, 15 minutes of
slow trot, whatever. Remember what you did or take notes on the trail. The
if you're my husband calculate it all in your head on the spot, or if you're
me, figure out the total miles later.

Later on, you'll get a feel for it and be able to go on any trail and kind
of guess - well, I was going about 4 mph for 3/4 of the ride, 6 mph for 1/8
and 12 mph for 1/8 and rode for 4 hours - so it was about a 20 mile ride.

Hi all! I want to thank all of you for your information and for
taking time to respond to a newbie! :o) I tried not doing 2pt on
Ranger on hills last night and first just leaning forward and then the
"froggie-style" (teehee) that was suggested. He moved most freely
with the frog thing. I will continue to try it different ways and see
what consistently works for him. We have lots of hills so lots of
practice there. On getting another mentor...I'll have to get a
rulebook and sort the good from the bad of her advice as it is the
only boarding facility that has access to trails anywhere near my
house. On riding alone...yes...I do like riding alone and plan to do
more of it. It is sort of considered rude at this barn to not call
and invite the other women along, so in keeping peace, I don't always
get out by myself. ;o) Silly question here....how do you all know
how many miles and what speed you are doing? I haven't a clue as to
how to figure this out.
