Hi Wendy:
Just to add to the above, so no one thinks USET is taking all the money of
international competitors. USET fully funds and sponsors all off continent
international competitions for the US. That means the organization picks up
the tab for everything, from transportation to hotels to food. Depending on
where the competition is, that tab could probably run $10,000 to $20,000 per
horse/rider team.
In return, all competitors are required to sign the waiver that any prize
money is signed over to the USET. I'm sure, Wendy, letting that check pause
only briefly in your hand must have been tough. This system started for
endurance in 1994 for the World Equestrian Games in Holland, which, so far,
is the only time endurance has been included with all the other USET
sponsored disciplines (show jumping, dressage, driving, and vaulting at that
time). Until 1994, all expenses for any overseas competitions had to be paid
by the competitors themselves, so, of course, any winnings were kept.
Also, you made some good points Wendy.
