I hope noone imagines that the timber companies would be happy with taking
the slash and spindly growth that creates the fire hazard and leaving the
big, healthy trees that slow fires by retaining moisture themselves and
helping the soil retain moisture by their shade. These big fires we have now
are burning just as wild in the clear cut forests as in the forests full of
tinder from previous years of fire surpression.
