To us a crop is a tool like any other. I don't recall ever using one on a 
ride but have indeed used one for our rather recalcitrant black mare who did 
NOT like water. It isn't used to beta a horse - conversely, the annoying 
tap-tap-tap generally will finally persuade a horse to go ahead rather than 
continue to be annoyed. I liken it to being tapped on the shoulder constantly 
- one of my pet peeves.  We have 4 crops - all gather a lot of dust - but 
there they are if we ever get a horse  who doesn't want to cross the creek!
