I was confronted with a Russian Orlov that was about 16:1 hh on the 120 k
ride I rode in Bremen, Germany, a few years ago. (I am 5'1" and chubby!)
First time I met this horse was the day before the ride, and first time I
actually got on him was 10 minutes before the ride started.... Hooo boy...
And lemme tell you, that country is FLAT!! The biggest elevation change was,
I think, the horse overpass over the Bremen freeway... NO chance of just
getting on from the uphill side, which always sufficed with the taller horses
I rode as a kid! <g> I was sure glad this was a sweet horse, as he suffered
my clamboring aboard from a perch atop an inverted bucket at the start, and
at each check, I had to find "something"--can remember maneuvering him into
ditches, up to the backs of cars to use bumpers, and a couple of other little
tricks. He was very patient with it all, and we managed to complete... :-)
