RE: Impaction
This sounds like something that the endurance folk might be really
interested in. While colic is hopefully not one of the first things one
worries about with distance riding, it is an issue as is hydration. But I'll
write to Dr. Worth and see what's in it and how it works.

I found a product which one of the members of the Eventers-L list
makes and markets. The product is called TractGard and the person
is Dr. Melyni Worth, PhD (in animal nutrition I believe). TractGard
is a digestive tract rehydrator. It has worked for our gelding when
everything else did not, he hasn't colicked for the last two winters
since we started using it. It is not extremely expensive, a year's
worth is less than $100 US.
Melyni was willing to send me a sample to try when I inquired, I
think she will still send a sample or sell a small amount for a
modest price. You can email her at melyni@intelos.net if you
would like to know more about TractGard and its use. It is
especially helpful for situations where a horse is stressed and
needs to keep moisture in the digestive system (e.g. trailering
in hot weather), but will only help if the horse has plenty of
access to water. So this stuff will not resolve every impaction
problem, but it has brought peace of mind for me with our problem.
Might help another of you, too.
